kush d choons

Dean James Dunkley (born 3 February 1974), better known as kush d choons (formerly DJD and kush d), is a British DJ and house music producer from Chichester, West Sussex, England.

His passion for electronic music began at the age of 15 when he started attending underground rave events across the South of England. Inspired by the energy of the scene, he bought his first set of turntables at just 16 years old after moving to Cambridge. Before long, he was performing at illegal warehouse and outdoor raves throughout the region, while also establishing himself in Cambridge’s club scene with regular appearances at legendary venues including Route 66 and Po Na Na. During this period, he performed under the name DJD, using his initials.

A dedicated student of the underground hardcore rave movement, DJD immersed himself in the scene throughout the early 1990s. As dance music evolved and genres began to diversify around 1996, his sound naturally followed, leading him towards Speed Garage and eventually the UK Garage explosion of the late 1990s. It was during this time that he adopted the name kush d, a nickname already used by friends.

In 2000, Dean swapped city life for the French Alps, spending several seasons in Val d’Isère and Valloire, where he became a regular fixture at après-ski parties, bars and clubs, entertaining crowds from around the world.

Following his time in the Alps, he settled in Wales, where he has remained ever since, aside from a year spent travelling around Australia.

kush d later rekindled his passion for Old Skool rave music and built one of the largest YouTube channels dedicated to showcasing classic vinyl and rare tracks from his extensive record collection. He also hosted popular six-hour weekly radio shows on Break Pirates, broadcasting every Wednesday and Friday for several years and earning a loyal following among Old Skool enthusiasts.

When an emerging hip-hop artist adopted the same stage name and began receiving national exposure on BBC Radio 1, Dean’s YouTube channel was removed due to the name conflict. Rather than seeing it as a setback, he embraced a fresh identity and kush d choons was born.

Today, kush d choons continues to bring the same passion and energy to every performance. Whether playing intimate venues or festival crowds, his love for underground dance music remains as strong as ever. He is a regular performer at après-ski events across the French Alps, has played extensively in Ibiza and Mallorca, performed for Babylon and Shangri-La, and currently holds a residency with We Are The Secret Society.

Alongside his DJ career, kush d choons has recently turned his focus towards music production. He already has three official releases available, with several more tracks currently under discussion with record labels, marking an exciting new chapter in a career spanning more than three decades.

Today, whether he’s behind the decks playing timeless classics or producing fresh new music in the studio, kush d choons remains driven by the same passion that first took him to the rave scene as a teenager—sharing great music and creating unforgettable moments on the dancefloor.
